Teen adventurer lost at sea

This month is all about the teenage adventurer. Unfortunately, not all of the news is good. On the crampons of 13-year-old Jordan Romero’s summit of Everest comes the news that 16-year-old global sailor Abby Sunderlund has activated two rescue beacons from a location somewhere in the Southern Indian Ocean.

Thankfully, her blog has a recent update from support team members that seems to indicate that while she is in trouble, she is quite capable of handling things until rescue arrives. High winds and engine trouble are just a couple of her current headaches, to put it mildly. Australian S&R is on the way.

In an age when most teenagers define a reasonable high school attendance record as an accomplishment, Ms. Sunderland was trying to become the youngest ever to circumnavigate the globe in a sailboat. Prom be damned.

Godspeed Abby.
