Sad Face

Can someone tell me the difference between an “emoji” and cave painting?

There are plenty of things I lament about the evolution of man, like skinny jeans, wolf hunters, and Matt Lauer. But our language is not one of them. It’s a beautiful, ever-versatile tool with which we can empower national uprisings or evoke something as minutely intimate as a tear.

Yet, in the midst of an ever-evolving technological advancement akin to the printing press, we use the Internet to devolve the very thing that created it with a compendium of simple, blunt-force negations of our language’s purpose. With so many words and turns of phrase at our disposal, we opt instead for banal smiling spots and digital symbols of feeling.
